The U.S. Mission in Thailand is one of the largest in the world, comprising such varied agencies as the Department of State, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Homeland Security the U.S. Customs Service, the U.S. Secret Service, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Armed Forces Research Institute for Medical Science, the Centers for Disease Control and the Peace Corps . In addition to our embassy in Bangkok, we maintain a Consulate General in Chiang Mai.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe U.S. Ambassador heads the Mission as the personal representative of the President of the United States. Assisted by members of the Embassy staff, the Ambassador conducts the official business of the Government of the United States in Thailand. The Ambassador also tries to ensure that U.S. policies are better known and understood by the Thai. This includes the negotiation of treaties and agreements, the exchange of information on issues of mutual interest to the two countries, and the provision of information to the U.S. on various subjects to enable officials and citizens of the United States to better understand the attitudes and interests of the Thai. The Royal Thai Embassy in Washington, D.C., performs similar tasks on behalf of the Royal Thai Government.\r\n\r\nThe Embassy staff: \r\n\r\n\r\nThe Embassy staff includes a Deputy Chief of Mission, who acts as the Ambassador\'s second-in-command and assumes the title of Charge d\'Affaires ad interim in the event the Ambassador should be absent from Thailand.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe Political, Economic, Administrative, Public Affairs and Consular Sections of the Embassy are each in the charge of a Counselor of Embassy. The Ambassador, and the officers of the staff through him, report directly to the Department of State in Washington.\r\n\r\n\r\nArmy, Naval and Air Attaches, grouped under a Defense Attache, the Counselor for Agricultural Affairs, the Commercial Counselor and the Senior Customs Officer are responsible to the Ambassador for general guidance in the performance of their activities and report directly to their respective departments and agencies in Washington. Representatives of other U.S. government agencies also are included within the Ambassador\'s staff.\r\n\r\n
