Udon Thani, or Udon (Udorn) as it is generally referred to by the local community, is a busy town in the north-east of Thailand (Issan or Isan), some 560kms from Bangkok. Udon Thani province stretches from the border province of Nong Khai in the north, to Khon Kaen in the south, Sakon Nakhon in the east, and Nong Bua Lam Phu in the west. Udon Thani is situated on a plateau with mountains and forested areas in the west. Archaeological evidence suggests that the earliest people settled in what is present day Udon Thani, 1,800-5,000 years ago. Excavations and explorations of over 50 sites of the Ban Chiang cultural settlements near Udon Thani, revealed that these pre-historic groups of people were agriculturists whose livelihoods were not that much different to the farmers in Udon Thani province today.
